The name of Hokokai pattern is taken from the Hokokai Javanese organization. The Japanese government at that time order batik to batiks entrepreneurs in Pekalongan which serve as a gift for Indonesian people who contributed to the Japanese government. This batik pattern adopt local pattern and influenced by other pattern, such as Pagi Sore and Butterflies Pattern. In Tionghoa culture, Java Hokokai represents an internal love.
